When wisdom teeth need to come out
Not every wisdom tooth has to be removed. Removal is usually recommended when they're impacted (stuck under the gum or bone), only partly erupted and trapping bacteria, decayed, causing repeated gum infections, damaging a neighboring tooth, or contributing to pain or a cyst. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that you can clean well often can stay.

What to expect during removal
We numb the area thoroughly so you're comfortable. Some wisdom teeth come out like any other tooth, while impacted ones may require a small surgical approach. We explain the plan and your comfort options beforehand, and give you written aftercare instructions to take home.
Recovering well
Recovery is usually smoother when you follow the aftercare closely. In general, rest for the first day, use ice on your cheek as directed, eat soft foods, and avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing early on, since those can dislodge the blood clot that protects the socket. Your written instructions are specific to your procedure, so follow those first.
When to call us after removal
Call if pain gets worse after the first few days instead of better, if you have a fever, a persistent bad taste, spreading swelling, or bleeding that won't stop. A painful condition called dry socket can happen when the clot is lost, and it's treatable. For severe swelling with trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the emergency room.
